PIECEWISE (2022-present)
In this series I’ve been painting imagined subjects — loose compositions of diverse and refashioned elements from editorial photographs. The figures emerge from estimation, incongruity, and nonsense.
ALL ART IS COLLABORATION (2022)
I’ve always been inspired by the artistry in fashion editorials. I’m a gay who came of age watching fashionTV and who — to this day — collages torn-out pages from print magazines into my journals 💅🏼✨. For this series, I started painting editorial photographs. This evolved into me superimposing subjects from editorial photography onto commonplace, everyday settings. The striking postures, patterns, and lighting which compose the original fashioned images are recontextualized as depictions of real-life.
AFFIRMATIONS (2016-2019)
I am a co-creator of a non-profit that provides aid to unaccompanied homeless youths — teenagers unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care. Aware of these independent youths, I celebrate the loving relationships in my life. I painted portraits of my chosen family, all people with which I share an intimate connection. Working from my own spontaneous photographs, the portraits represent authentic moments between myself and the subject. The paintings offer affirming representations meant to equalize and humanize. My optimistic and cheerful art practice challenges the symbolic violence of pain narratives that pervade discourses around oppressed groups. It directs attention to the prosperity of intimate relationships, an undervalued wealth.
